Jay Maisel, Tibor Kalman, Keith Haring
Arguably New York’s most dynamic thoroughfare, the Bowery has truly been through it all. It claims the title as Manhattan’s first bona fide Main Street, a popular shopping destination, eventually becoming the city’s most dangerous area teeming with homelessness and criminal activity. Recently, the Bowery has evolved into an active cultural hub, lined with innovative architecture, chic boutiques and eateries. Recent developments may have shifted the neighborhood’s identity away from its seedy origins, yet the Bowery hasn’t completely abandoned its gritty past.
On our tour, we will discover the rich cultural qualities that have both survived and sprung up during the Bowery’s transformation. We’ll investigate a dozen sites that have influenced the neighborhood’s status as a dynamic art capital and architectural testing ground by checking out works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Chuck Close, and Ken Rock. Join us as we delve into the mysteries that make New York such an extraordinary culture mecca!
