SoHo 1.4 miles | 17 sights
Walter De Maria, Gordon Matta-Clark, Picasso
Starting in the 1970s, artists began to occupy the industrial wasteland of SoHo and transform it into a thriving cultural hub. Inexpensive, open lofts became vibrant living communities and working spaces. The void left by the desolate space allowed artists to explore new ways to create art, and SoHo began its slow climb back into popularity. Today the bustling streets and upscale shops cover the past almost entirely.
On our tour we will unearth the history by looking to the streets and the skies for the traces of Jackson Pollock, Walter de Maria, Ken Hiratsuka, Pablo Picasso and many more. We will uncover more than 20 sites from public art to architecture to historic fragments and discover what contributed to making New York the fascinating place it is today.
